Dr.  Maricar Rabonza

Research Fellow

Maricar Rabonza is a disaster risk and climate analytics specialist with 12 years of experience in multi-hazard and urban risk modelling. She completed her PhD at the Earth Observatory of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, where her research on probabilistic and counterfactual modelling inspired the Averted Disaster Award (supported by the World Bank) and was featured in the UN Global Assessment Report. She has worked across academia, industry, and government-funded projects. Most recently, she was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Earth Observatory of Singapore, leading projects on dynamic urban risk in Asia, including case studies on earthquake, flood, and volcanic hazards. She also contributed to a climate risk analytics startup, developing flood and wind risk tools for insurance applications. Some of her favourite academic moments were co-teaching a data science class and mentoring PhD and undergraduate students. Maricar holds BSc and MSc degrees in Civil-Geotechnical Engineering from the University of the Philippines Diliman, where she later continued as a senior researcher with a government-funded multi-hazard research institute. Outside of work, Maricar enjoys long walks, sketching on her iPad and is always on the hunt for the best flat white.
