I realised that I really loved learning and answering questions posed to me by collecting evidence and analysing it. So I decided to undertake my own research and get the experience which comes with completing a PhD.

Building connections with your peers is great for networking, broadening your learning and helping you feel connected to your research team.

My work will have a great impact on the type of building materials being used in properties on the Wildland-Urban Interface.

Ultimately, my findings could serve as a valuable resource for future researchers and scientists, enabling them to refine wildfire management strategies.

Success in a research environment is deeply intertwined with the presence of supportive supervisors, a robust support structure, collaborative peers, enriching network opportunities, and avenues for continuous learning and growth.

In the first couple of months of my phD I got to help another student capture and process long-nosed potoroos in the Otways. It was such a fun opportunity and it checked off a dream fieldwork experience from my list.

Whilst my journey into a PhD may deviate from the conventional path, I found the practical knowledge and experience gained through working in land management has forever changed the lens of how I approach research for the better.

A good mentor looks like someone who shows genuine interest in academic and professional growth of their student.
