Q: What “day to day” type activities that you do?
As I am now midway through the first year of my PhD, most of my day-to-day activities involve staying updated with the latest advancements in the application of remote sensing tools in forest research. Alongside this, I am progressing on the first objective of my thesis, which focuses on combining spatial tools such as QGIS with machine learning techniques implemented in Python. My work is largely computational, involving data collection from satellite and airborne sources, followed by extensive coding and data analysis to derive meaningful results. While the current phase is heavily desk- and code-based, I will also be conducting fieldwork to validate the outputs of my initial research stage.
Q: What pathway did you take to get into the research?
My pathway into research has been a significant transition. I began with a Bachelor of Technology in Civil Engineering, but it was during my master’s degree (M.S. Research in Water Resources Engineering) that I developed a strong interest in research. Through comprehensive data analysis and hands-on technical work, I strengthened my programming and analytical skills and became fascinated by the idea of framing unanswered scientific questions and using advanced tools and technology to address them. This experience inspired me to pursue a PhD, where I could build on those skills and contribute to solving real-world problems at a larger scale.
Q: What’s something you’re proud of from your work?
I am proud of the transition I made from completing my master’s at IIT Delhi, the top engineering institute in India, to pursuing my PhD at the University of Melbourne, ranked among the world’s top universities (QS 2025 – 13). Experiencing these academic environments has reshaped the way I think about problems, both in research and in life, and has given me the confidence to tackle challenges with a broader perspective.
Q: What is one thing to look for in a supervisor?
Choosing a supervisor is one of the most important decisions in a PhD journey. A supportive supervisor not only makes the process smoother but also fosters both academic and professional growth. I believe it’s essential to look for someone who shows genuine interest in their students’ development and provides constructive guidance along the way. I feel fortunate to have such a team of supervisors, and I am truly grateful for their constant support.
Q: • What do you value or find important to success in your research environment?
For me, success in research comes from the environment that surrounds you. Supportive supervisors, collaborative peers, and access to strong networks and resources all play a crucial role. Being part of a group where ideas are shared openly and encouragement is mutual creates a space that not only drives research forward but also makes the journey more rewarding.
